A man and a 10-month-old boy are dead in what police are calling a murder-suicide.

The two have been identified as Rafal Zembowicz and his son, Adam.

The boy’s mother, who is also the man’s wife, called police around 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening when the man, who was 39, and the baby didn’t return to their Anjou home after leaving earlier in the day.

The couple lived together but was going through a separation.

Neighbour Nicole Rouillard got to know the family and said despite the couple’s difficulties, the wife had made it clear she was not planning on trying to keep the children from seeing Zembowicz.

"She told us no way would she take Adam away from him, that the boy needed to see his father," she said. "She wasn't anxious that something like that would happen."

A neighbour told CTV Montreal the couple has four children in total. The three other children are older and only a teenaged girl still lived at the house.

Police found their bodies in a shed behind the family home, at the corner of Vendeens and Goncourt Aves., around 10 p.m. Both the man and baby were declared dead at the scene.

The 43-year-old mother was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

Rouillard said there was nothing about Zembowicz that suggested he was capable of carrying out anything like a murder-suicide.

“I was attached to that little boy. Yesterday morning, we were leaving for mass and she came up with the baby, and he recognized us at 10 months old, and he would smile,” she said.

An autopsy will be performed on both bodies to determine the exact cause of the deaths.
