MONTREAL - Montreal's arson squad is investigating two fires, one in NDG and a second in Montreal North, that are considered suspicious in nature.

The first fire started on the fourth floor of an apartment building on Walkley Ave. at 10:15 p.m. Sunday.

Firefighters say the fire started in a kitchen, and led to the evacuation of the buildings 26 units, and although nobody was injured, a 25-year-old pregnant woman was treated for shock.

A 24-year-old man was questioned overnight by police after firefighters said the fire could be criminal in nature, but did not go so far as to say the fire was deliberately set.

Residents of the fourth floor were not able to return to their homes overnight, although damage was contained to the apartment where the fire started.

Second fire shows signs of arson

Later on a pizzeria caught fire in Montreal North.

At 12:30 a.m. a police officer on patrol saw flames coming from Pizzeria Ranone, on Henri Bourassa Blvd. near Racette Ave.

One of the restaurant's front windows was smashed, and when firefighters extinguished the flames, they found evidence a Molotov cocktail had been used to start the fire.

Damage to the pizzeria is extensive, but nobody was hurt.
