First Nations demand caribou protection as feds and Quebec argue over jurisdiction

Quebec's so-called 'independent commission' regarding the fate of woodland and mountain caribou appears to have been the last straw for First Nations and environmentalists. Headed by forest economics expert Nancy Gélinas, consultations are gauging opinions on only two proposed scenarios – one which may restore habitat while threatening forestry jobs and a second in which forestry would continue unabated.

Kahnawake students lead protest against Quebec's Bill 96

Following demonstrations last weekend in Montreal where thousands walked through the downtown core in protest of Quebec's French-language laws, students in the Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawk) community of Kahnawake are leading a walk of protest Saturday.

Russian sentenced to life in Ukraine's 1st war crimes trial

A Russian soldier who pleaded guilty to killing a civilian was sentenced by a Ukrainian court Monday to life in prison -- the maximum -- amid signs the Kremlin may hold trials of its own, particularly of the captured fighters who held out at Mariupol's steel plant.
