As Canada prepares to celebrate its 150th birthday, the Parti Quebecois is looking for evidence that Confederation has been bad for Quebec.
MNA Stephane Bergeron along with UQAM history professor Gilles Laporte have launched what they're calling L'Autre 150, or The Other 150th.
They are asking Quebecers to submit their ideas in order to present 150 ways that Quebec has been let down by the creation of Canada.
"Through those events and through those facts, what we want to show is that the promises that have been made to Quebecers with the federation, probably that the federation didn't meet those promises. That is what we will illustrate throughout 2017," said Bergeron.
Laporte specializes in the history of the 1800s and the Patriotes Rebellion. He has written several books and graphic novels about history.
Meanwhile Lucien Bouchard and other notable figures are promoting French Canadians as the builders of the continent.
On Monday Senator Andre Pratte (formerly the Editor in Chief of La Presse), The Walrus magazine editor Jonathan Kay, and several other writers unveiled their book Legacy: How French Canada shaped North America.
Bouchard, who wrote the chapter about Henri Bourassa, said politicians today are quick to wage rhetorical war with "no content, no substance" and he believes this has led to political apathy.
The book includes chapters on Jacques Plante, Gabrielle Roy, and many other prominent francophones.
