A 22-month-old boy has been revived after a near-drowning in Laval Sunday afternoon.

Urgences Sante performed CPR on the boy after he was rescued from a backyard pool at 2:30 p.m. at 324 Robitaille St. in the Ste. Dorothee district of Laval.

The boy had been playing in the backyard with other children, while the adults were inside the home.

One of the children opened the gate on the deck for the fence around the pool. The 22-month-old climbed the ladder to get into the above-ground pool.

He was discovered in the pool by his grandmother. It is not known how long he was in the pool, but he was unconscious.

When Urgences Sante arrived at the scene, they managed to resuscitate the toddler in ambulance en route to a hospital.

The boy was conscious and alert, and in his mother's arms.

He is undergoing further assessments in hospital.

The latest incident comes after in the wake of three deaths from drowning in recent days, including two two-year-old children who died within hours of each other in separate pool drownings Thursday.

Those deaths raise the number of drownings in Quebec so far this year to 45, with close to a quarter of those in the last month alone. Six toddlers have drowned this year in backyard pools.

There have already been 13 more drowning deaths in Quebec in 2012 than at this time in 2011.

Companies that install pools and pool safety equipment told CTV Montreal they have been getting dozens of calls every day from worried pool owners seeking to make their pools safer.

The Quebec Lifesaving Society is reminding parents that the number one safety measure when it comes to children and water is to keep a very close eye on them.
