The preliminary hearing for the man accused of shooting several people on election night has been cancelled.

A judge has granted Richard Henry Bain his request to go straight to trial, ending the process where evidence is presented to the courts first.

"When the defendant realized that the accusations are well founded the preliminary hearing is not necessary, it's a rehearsal, and for Mr. Bain it's not something he was interested in.

"He was more interested in what was happening around the preliminary inquiry," said Crown prosecutor Elaine Perrault.

Bain faces 15 charges, including first degree murder, for the 2012 shooting at the Metropolis theatre.

So far, Bain has been very vocal during his court appearances but last week a judge imposed a publication ban so stringent media were not allowed to report exchanges during the pre-trial hearing.

Bain, who's representing himself, chose to forgo the rest of his preliminary hearing, so his case can go directly to trial.

A date for the trial will be set on Sept. 3, 2013.
