UPDATE: Montreal police confirmed they discovered the man's body in May 2016. They do not believe there was any criminal element to his death. Our original story follows:

Police say they are puzzled by the disappearance of a Montreal cab driver.

Si Belkacem Silakhal, 52, was last seen around 6 p.m. Dec. 21 in downtown Montreal. He was driving an adapted black 2012 Dodge Caravan minivan, which was found near the Peel Basin Monday.

But Silakhal was not in the van and there were no traces of violence inside, nor is there any proof a crime has been committed, police said.

Police had part of the Lachine Canal near the basin drained to see if they can find Silakhal or any clues about his whereabouts but found nothing.

“Nothing seems to be out of the ordinary,” said Montreal police spokesperson Andre Leclerc.

His credit cards and debit cards haven’t been touched since he disappeared. His family says it's unlike him to go so long without checking in with them.

Silakhal has greying hair, brown eyes and weighs 85 kilograms (187 lbs). Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911.
