Ottawa is investigating allegations that a former head of the Federal Bridges Corporation accepted bribes.

Conservative MP Jacques Gourde made the announcement Friday in the House of Commons, in response to questions from the opposition New Democratic Party.

Media reports have suggested that Michel Fournier, a manager at SNC–Lavalin, deposited $1.5 million into the Swiss bank account of a company called Promotag, controlled by bridge official Michel Fournier.

SNC-Lavalin won a contract to repair the deck of the Jacques Cartier Bridge.

The Deputy Minister of Transportation promised to to investigate what Gourde described as “troubling allegations.”

He noted that Fournier was appointed by the previous Liberal government.

The NDP were taking aim at the Liberals in the House of Commons on the issue Friday.

“A representative of SNC-Lavalin alleged gave $1.5 million to the director of the bridge corporation, then his company received a $127 million contract, suddenly, as if by chance. It looks like collusion or corruption and we have questions about this," said NDP MP Rosane Doré Lefebvre.

Liberal MP Stéphane Dion said he knew nothing about the case but agreed that an investigation is due.

“Any case of millions of misappropriated dollars must be investigated. It true, this is very, very serious. This is would be a serious crime,” said Dion.
