Christine Black, Equipe Denis Coderre. She has worked at Escale, a youth centre in Montreal North, since 2002 and has been the director for 10 years. Why was it called: The byelection was called to replace former mayor Gilles Deguire, who stepped down in January. Weeks later, he was charged with sexual assault and sexual touching of a minor.

What are the issues: Racial tensions have been renewed in the borough since the shooting of Jean-Pierre Bony. Bony died in hospital earlier this month after he was shot with a rubber bullet during a drug raid. A protest in the borough to denounce perceived police brutality in Montreal North turned violent, but police later said they don’t believe anyone involved in the violent part of the event actually lived in the neighbourhood.

A group of activists came out last week saying they want the next mayor to address racial profiling.

Poverty is also an issue in Montreal North – according to a Centraide report from 2013, almost half of children aged 0 to 5 in the borough live below the low-income cutoff. The average for the island is 30 per cent.

When will voting take place: From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters must bring a piece of identification. The location is written on the voter information card. Last week, 1,899 people voted in advance polling.
