A former Charest government cabinet minister, who was booted out of the Liberal party, is stepping down from politics.

Tony Tomassi announced today that he is resigning from the National Assembly effective immediately.

In a written statement Tomassi said "Throughout the years I have represented with pride the voters of LaFontaine, and I am pleased to have earned their confidence three times since the election of 2003."

Tomassi was charged last year with fraud and breach of trust after allegedly using a credit card provided by the now defunct security company BCIA for two and a half years.

The MNA was removed from cabinet in May 2010, when the allegations were first made.

He did not assume his responsibilities as MNA," said PQ MNA. Nicolas Girard. "As MNA we have responsibility in our riding and at the National Assembly and he did not assume that responsibility for two years so I think it's time for him to quit but I think he should have quit earlier."

He'l get $122,000 in severance pay according to Quebec Taxpayers League.
