Elections Montreal has confirmed that Projet Montreal leader Richard Bergeron has been re-elected as a councillor.

Bergeron's running mate, Janine Krieber, was running in the Ville-Marie borough and narrowly won her seat. After a recount the Projet Montreal candidate defeated the closest rival, Philippe Schnobb, by 36 votes.

Since Bergeron did not succeed in his bid to be mayor, his running mate will step aside and let him hold the seat.

Bergeron has already said that after failing in his third bid to be mayor he will be leaving municipal politics once Projet Montreal chooses a new leader.

He anticipates resigning within the next 24 months.
