Montreal police officers shot and killed a man Sunday evening while intervening in some sort of dispute inside an apartment.
The incident took place at 1900 Papineau Ave. around 10 p.m. Sunday that led to a Montreal police officer shooting a 45-year-old man. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries and died of his wounds.
The man shot dead was reportedly named Rene Gallant, 45. Media reports suggest that he was trying to strangle his girlfriend, a mother of three, when police arrived. He then came at an officer with a knife, according to a report on the TVA network, and was shot dead.
As in every case of serious injury or death involving the Montreal police force the Sureté du Quebec has taken over the investigation.
At this point the SQ is not confirming that a Montreal police officer fired the deadly bullet, even though an earlier report from the Montreal police force confirmed an officer was responsible.
