The MP for the Ste-Foy riding of Louis-Hebert gave a heartfelt speech in the House of Commons Thursday, offered his most sincere condolences to the families of the victims in the mosque attack.

Joel Lightbound also asked for their forgiveness.

“I also want to apologize to them, apologize for having observed stigmatization, ostracization over the past years,” he said. “Having the seen the mistrust, the fear, the hatred among my peers and having tried to respond but not having done enough, silence also has consequences. Never again.”

Lightbound went on to say that the Muslim community is at home in Ste-Foy and always will be.

The Liberal MP ended by saying he hopes that they can find the strength to “see through the darkness in our society and the light that remains.”

Lightbound received a standing ovation for his words.
