Operation Nez Rouge volunteers were busy Saturday night, offering 5,951 rides across the province.

The Quebec City area saw the largest number of rides at 527, followed by the Outaouais (230), Montreal (213) and then Laval/Lower Laurentians (203).

In an interview with The Canadian Press, spokesperson David Latouche said it was another good weekend for Nez Rouge volunteers. No less than 9000 volunteers took part in 13,200 rides since Thursday, and the weekend isn’t over yet.

Quebec is by far the Canadian province where people use Operation Nez Rouge the most to avoid driving after drinking alcohol and get home safely during the holiday season.

Nearly 3,750 volunteers were working to give safe rides in Quebec Saturday night. In total, some 56,000 volunteers will be participating in this 31st season across Canada, up to Dec. 31.

The service, of course, also allows the organization to raise funds. Nez Rouge collects more than $1.5 million annually across Canada and the money is passed on in full to organizations that promote youth and amateur sports.

Latouche, however, said each Nez Rouge user will be escorted home with pleasure, even if they don’t provide a donation, since the organization’s main objective is to keep roads safe for the holidays.

Don’t forget: Nez Rouge needs volunteers up to Dec. 31. Anyone interested is invited to complete the online form a few days in advance.
