Good news for one of the city’s biggest industries as Tourism Montreal announced on Wednesday that this spring has been the best in 20 years.

The announcement is based on data collected on visitors, hotel occupancy rates and spending.

According to Tourism Montreal President Yves Lalumiere there was a 19 per cent increase in revenue in April alone thanks to more conferences coming to Montreal.

Lalumiere attributed the boost to the low dollar. With a 30 per cent exchange rate and increased marketing to the American market, there has been an 81 per cent increase in American tourism compared to last year.

The best news, said Lalumiere, is that the best news is yet to come.

“Not only this summer but 2016 and 2017 with the 375th (anniversary of Montreal),” he said. “That's going to be spectacular in 2017. This summer should be extremely good. So July, we're already seeing an increase, and the Americans are booking six weeks behind so we're seeing August coming along nicely. Osheaga has a very nice program so I think that's going to help us fill out those rooms in August.  So, a very good summer, great spring and for the rest of the year, as well, extremely  positive.”

Lalumiere added that advertising and a very visible international presence from Mayor Denis Coderre have contributed to the tourism boom.
