Via Rail has stepped up security at its train stations in Montreal and elsewhere.
A spokesperson for Via said a threat was recently made against the company, although the company does not believe the threat is justified.
The company has, however, reminded employees to be vigilant, and has increased police and search dog patrols in some areas.
There are reports the threat came to the company's IT department demanding a ransom be paid via bitcoin.
Via said it, like all transportation companies, receives unsubstantiated threats very frequently.
