Two more judges have been appointed to the Quebec Superior Court by the federal government.

Federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould has named Marie-Paule Gagnon and Mario Longpré to the positions.

Gagnon will work in Quebec City, while Longpré will work in Montreal.

They come in addition to the six judges who have been appointed to the Superior Court of Quebec since May.

The lack of judges has been an ongoing issue as the a backlog of criminal cases has forced the government to fill critical gaps in the province’s justice system.

Quebec Justice Minister Stephanie Vallee has called on the federal government to appoint 10 new Superior Court justices in the province in short order.

As a consequence of the ruling, suspected criminals across the country have been set free because the length of their trials exceeded the legal limit.
