The city of Montreal will turn to the provincial government for funding to address the cash crunch at the STM.

In an interview with La Presse, Mayor Grald Tremblay said it's time to solve the STM's budget problems once and for all. He said he plans to ask the province for an additional $30 to $55 million per year to fund the city's public transit system.

Tremblay insisted there will be no reduction in bus and metro service, and there will be no fare hikes this year, even though the STM is facing a $40 million deficit.

The city and public transit users are already doing their part -- the Quebec government is the missing piece of the financial puzzle, he said.

Tremblay promised to be in Quebec City with Michel Labrecque, president of the STM, and Andr Lavalle, member of the Montreal executive committee responsible for transport, when they make their plea to Quebec Transport Minister Julie Boulet.
