The city of Montreal announced Wednesday it is seeking to cut $155 million from its budget.
Citing the impact of the global economic downturn, it says it is taking the measures before things get too bad.
Among the steps they will be taking as soon as possible are:
- two per cent reduction in the payroll
- thirty per cent reduction in fees to external firms
- hiring freeze
- wage freeze for elected officials for 2009
Through these measures and a few others, the city thinks it can cut $95 million.
It also says boroughs must make efforts to cut back as well-- $20 million dollars worth of efforts.
The STM was also told it needs to save $40 million.
The mayor took the opportunity to send a message about paying for public transporation to the Quebec and Canadian governments.
"In our transit plan, we put aside a record $332 million in 2008, and ridership increased by five per cent. The users are doing their part. Montreal is doing it's part. The governments [of Quebec and of Canada], need to support our success," said Tremblay in a press release.
