With only six days until Christmas, snow is not in the forecast this mild December.
For some, the lack of snow is a welcome relief from our long Quebec winters. But some are missing it in a big way.
Most outdoor rinks would make better soccer pitches right now, with only a few open, including at the Old Port and the Olympic Stadium.
Some kids got creative Saturday, rolling up socks to stage a 'snowball' fight.
“We planned a birthday party for my daughter - we were going to go ice skating and make snowmen, but there's no snow,” said Kari Keiser.
Less snow means fewer people buying winter gear at the Austrian Ski Shop, said Mark Chamandy-Cook.
“I think anybody in the clothing industry, you know weather, it’s winter boots, winter jackets, they're all feeling the pinch,” he said.
The absence of snow also has an effect on the animal kingdom: animals change coats, eating habits and some start hibernating when the snow arrives.
A lack of snow can be a disadvantage from some wildlife, said Elizabeth Landry, a biologist at the Ecomuseum Zoo in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue.
“If we look the example of certain rabbits or hares we change colours in order to camouflage better in the winter time, so if we become white ready for snow and there's no snow, well maybe those animals will be a little be more detectable, easily catchable by a predator,” she explained.
