QUEBEC - Parti Quebecois Leader Pauline Marois wants to limit how long someone can be premier.

Nobody should be allowed more than two mandates -- or 10 years -- running the province, Marois told a news conference Tuesday.

"It's important that there be a turnover of political personnel," she said. "That there be a different outlook on things.

"It's important to have new people at the head of the government. That's why we say 10 years is enough."

The 61-year-old Marois denied such a move would be a nudge in the direction of a republican-type system.

"Not really, because it is possible to do that in our system now," she said. "And if we want to go into a presidential system, we will have to discuss that with the population of Quebec.

"Maybe when we are sovereign, it could be interesting to study this possibility."

The Opposition leader also said a PQ government would extend the idea of limited mandates to municipal politics.

A mayor of a community of more than 5,000 people would be limited to three terms, or 12 years, in power, she said.

Marois believes such moves would help restore the public's faith in its elected officials.

She also said they would not violate the Constitution.
