After beating the young woman severely enough to break her skull, her attacker fled by bus, the court heard Thursday in the trial of the beating death of Karina Esquivel.

James Gould has pleaded not guilty to a charge of second degree murder in the case.

Thursday the trial got underway with testimony from witnesses, including from crime scene investigators.

Details

The court heard that, on Apr. 23, 2007, Esquivel went to a party at the apartment of her friend, Imane Akraif, on Racine Street in Dorval.

Witnesses said there were other friends at the apartment, including James Gould and his brother Jeremiah.

Akraif allegedly wanted to go out for the night with Esquivel, but her boyfriend, James, did not want her to go.

The two reportedly got into an argument, and Esquivel intervened.

The court heard Gould pushed and punched her, and then wrestled Akraif to the ground.

He then turned his attention back to Esquivel on the ground, and eventually broke her skull.

The prosecution said Gould's brother Jeremiah tried unsuccessfully to stop him.

The court heard he then fled by bus.

His shoes were allegedly covered in blood, and Jeremiah supposedly later swapped shoes with him.

James was eventually found in hiding in Ville Saint-Pierre.
