For the second time in two days Montreal mayor Denis Coderre played host to a federal leader.

Green party leader Elizabeth May spoke about sustainable development, tolls on the Champlain Bridge, and a new relationship between Ottawa and Canada's major cities.

She brought a guest: Daniel Green, the party's candidate for the riding of Ville Marie South West Nuns' Island.

This week Coderre presented a shopping list for federal leaders, and May agreed with some items on that list, but not all.

In particular, May believed that tolls should be in place on the Champlain Bridge to discourage drivers.

"If the city wants to put in place a system that discourages the use of automobile, because it's more convenient and cheaper to be taking good quality modern mass transit transportation, then we don't have an issue about tolls at all," said May.

Green agreed with her.

"Tolls can help reduce the private car," said Green. "It is not the only way to reduce the private car and we will see if we get an SLR [light rail] solution we might get reduction of the private car without tolls."

Coderre argues there should be no tolls on the replacement for the Champlain because he considers it an existing piece of road infrastructure.
