A beloved performer in Montreal's folk music scene has passed away.

Penny Lang joined Montreal's burgeoning folk community in the early 1960s and quickly became a star.

Over the years, she performed at folk festivals and clubs around the world.

According to her fan page she turned down a chance to be the first to record Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne".

Lang died on Sunday at her home in British Columbia.

She had just celebrated her 74th birthday.
