MONTREAL - Firefighters leapt into action Monday morning to battle a blaze that thraetened one of the city's most historic areas.

Hoses were out dousing an old greystone at 11 Notre-Dame West at 8:15 a.m. Monday where the five-story building was menaced with a blaze that began in the basement.

The squad threw its considerable resources to counter the flames, as they feared the fire could spread quickly spread to adjacent properties in Old Montreal.

Eighteen trucks and 40 firefighters were brought in and quelled the fire, which started in the basement of a restaurant.
