Tragedy struck Wednesday morning in Mont Laurier.

A member of our CTV family was killed in a helicopter crash.

CTV cameraman Hugh Haugland was taking shots of the aftermath of Tuesday's tornado when the helicopter crashed near Route 117. The pilot, Roger Belanger of Mont Laurier, also died.

The helicopter lost power and was attempting to land when it touched power cables, said Michel Perrier, director of the Mont-Laurier airport.

"The helicopter struck a wire that the pilot probably didn't see because it was hidden by the trees," said Perrier.

The pole attached to the wire crashed, bringing the helicopter crashing to the ground, where it caught fire.

Haugland's body was found a few feet away from the debris.

Hugh, 44 years old and the son of former CTV Montreal anchor Bill Haugland, is survived by his common-law spouse Francine Maill, and his daughters Evie, 19 and Lianne, 14.

Roger Belanger was a veteran pilot in his 60s.

The bodies of the two men will be taken to Montreal where autopsies will be performed.

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to members of the Haugland and Belanger families.
