Staff and students at an elementary school in Ahuntsic will have a tumultuous return to school this year with word that they'll be relocated while their dilapidated building is extensively renovated.

Crumbling ceiling plaster and run-down walls and floors have created a security risk at Ecole Saint-Paul-de-la-Croix near Henri Bourassa and St-Hubert.

"Following a recommendation by outside experts, (the board) must undertake major work as soon as possible," the Commission Scolaire de Montreal said in a news release.

A total of 311 students will attend classes at five nearby schools until the $2 million renovation project is completed, likely by the new year, says the French-language board.

Three elementary schools, a high school and an adult-education centre have set aside classrooms for the students.
