Quebec singer-songwriter Beatrice Martin, better known by her stage name Coeur de Pirate, is publicly stating that she is a queer.

Martin said the Orlando massacre at a gay nightclub, and the shooting at Bataclan last year while she was touring in France, have convinced her to be open about her personal life.

In her open letter Martin explains how her first sexual feelings were for a girl, but when she was rejected she denied that aspect of her life and tried to live as a heterosexual.

She married tattoo artist Alex Peyrat in July 2012 and gave birth to a daughter later that year.

"That is why I’m coming out as queer today; because I can no longer be scared of what people might think about me," wrote Martin.

In her letter, Martin says that all her homosexual feelings returned following the birth of her child, and that she can no longer live like "a complete fraud."
