Quebec's auditor general has said he is considering investigating the provincial families minister's finances, after the opposition Thursday accused him of shady dealings regarding daycares and his family's construction businesses.

Tony Tomassi's ethics were under fire by Parti Quebec leader Pauline Marois and her families department critic Nicolas Girard, who asked him in the National Assembly if his family's construction firms had built or renovated a daycare since 2003.

Tomassi admitted they worked on a Centre de la Petite Enfance in 2001 and 2002, but not since 2003, when he was elected as an MNA for the LaFontaine riding.

Premier Jean Charest, who has typically allowed Tomassi to defend himself, stood up from his chair Thursday when confronted by Marois when she asked the premier how long he could tolerate Tomassi in his ministerial position.

"The premier must be completely blind," said Marois.

Charest accused the opposition leader of mudslinging, and defended Tomassi, saying the accusations were nothing more than rumours Marois picked up off the ground.

"Everything she can pick up from the ground ends up in the National Assembly," he retorted.
