Francois Legault said Sunday that his five-week summer tour has convinced him that the PQ’s values charter is far less of a priority among voters than the economy and jobs.
However, he presented his party as offering a middle road on the issue and stated that he would support the religious clothing restrictions if they were to apply only to judges, police officers and elementary and high school teachers but not medical professionals and daycare staff.
The minority PQ government requires support either from Legault's CAQ or Philippe Couillard's Liberals for the bill to pass.
The Liberals have stated that they will not support the legislation.
Legault, speaking from his Assomption riding Sunday, said that the legislation would pass easily if the PQ were to amend it to his specifications.
He also said that he would support the invocation of the notwithstanding clause if a court invalidated the law once passed.
Legault, like Liberal leader Couillard, continued to try to hammer away at the PQ government on the economy.
“Families and the middle class are stifled,” he said. “This can’t last. It’s clear that we have to ease the tax burden on families.”
Legault also spoke of his plan to create an innovation centre aimed at boosting the provincial economy, in the same way the Silicon Valley has boosted the California economy.
His book of suggestions on how to improve Quebec’s economy is expected to come out next month.
