QUEBEC CITY- It was a peaceful and alcohol-free Fete Nationale celebration Thursday night on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City.

Only a few thousand people showed up, far less than last year.

Rain that fell during most of the show and tough new alcohol restrictions likely discouraged some people from attending.

Under new rules adopted after a rowdy event last year, it was forbidden to bring alcohol into a large area near the Plains of Abraham.

Checkpoints around the Plains were used to verify the contents of bags.

Police made just one arrest during the program compared to 27 arrests last year and the stabbing of a young man.

During a massive party in Montreal's Park Maisonneuve, only four arrests were made in what Montreal police call an "exemplary" evening.
