MONTREAL - Emergency crews had to deal with a bizarre situation in downtown Montreal when a small front-loader spent several hours hanging off the side of a building under construction at 866 Mayor St. near Bleury Street.

Construction crews were removing the facade of the building and using a crane to lower a small front-loader from the tenth floor to the seventh floor.

At 8:30 a.m., as the vehicle was being lowered by crane, a platform swung and the vehicle rolled off partway, getting wedged against the side of the building.

"When they made this move, the platform moved from the building and the tractor was not stable between the building and the platform," said Montreal fire department operations chief Luc Robillard.

Witnesses say a man on the vehicle managed to climb to safety without injury before rescue crews arrived.

Emergency authorities spent the next three hours securing the loader with a crane and lowered it to the ground shortly before noon.
