A senior Sureté du Quebec director has been temporarily removed from his post following an anti-corruption investigation.

Jean Cowan, the director of the Eastern district of Quebec (which includes the Quebec City region, the Lower St. Lawrence, the Gaspé, and the Chaudiere-Appalaches) has been reassigned to administrative duties.

Cowan has more than 20 years of service with the SQ.

The SQ confirmed the changes, and that Cowan had been investigated by UPAC, the province's permanent anti-corruption unit, but would not disclose the nature of the alleged offences.

Cowan will report directly to the Deputy Manager of the SQ's Montreal bureau for the duration of the investigation.
