There was an open house Saturday to introduce West Islanders to the new Montreal Police Station 3 in Pierrefonds.

It was a family-friendly affair, with activities and exhibitions for both children and adults.

SWAT team demonstrations, bomb-sniffing dogs and police horses were all part of the four-hour event at 14680 Pierrefonds Blvd.

There was even a mock crime scene set up to give visitors a chance to experience what it's like to investigate a case.

"It helps -- especially with the kids -- demystify the police force and make them closer to (police)," said parent Stephane Rousseau.

Commander Michel Wilson said the goal of the event was to build bridges with the community.

"We need you to help us. If you see a crime, call us -- that's the point of it. We try to make a team," Wilson said.

In addition giving citizens a glimpse of how they do their jobs, police were also showing off another aspect of the station: it was built with the environment in mind.

The station is equipped with energy efficient lighting and water systems, and battery-operated vehicles.
