Fire destroyed multiple buildings overnight on a farm near Montreal.

Flames were spotted around 11 p.m. Thursday and they rapidly engulfed multiple buildings in Saint Alexis de Montcalm, about 60 km north of Montreal.

Firefighters were unable to control the fire, and two hours after the fire began used a backhoe to knock down buildings in an attempt to limit its spread.

While crews knocked down buildings, truck drivers hauled away trailers in an attempt to save what little they could.

Multiple stacks of bushels and boxes, ready to collect the harvest, seemed to have escaped the damage because they were upwind from the flames.

However it appears that all permanent buildings at the farm, Productions Maraicheres Mailhot (Mailhot Market Gardens) were destroyed.

The main crops were broccoli, cauliflower and green beans.

The cause of the fire is not known.
