According to documents obtained by La Presse, Quebec’s anti-corruption unit has reason to believe former Montreal mayor Gerald Tremblay not only knew about corruption in this city, but he participated in illegal activities.

The document is an affidavit filed in court by an investigator trying to obtain search warrant for Tremblay’s home. The document says UPAC investigators were looking for proof Tremblay knew about his party’s alleged illegal activities when they raided his Outremont home and country house July 29.

La Presse says the raid on Tremblay’s home is part of Project FRONDE, a UPAC investigation looking at the alleged illegal financing of Tremblay’s Union Montreal party through false receipts, cancelled water meter contract and collusion between companies and the party to rig the tendering process, among other things.

Tremblay has always denied he knew about wrongdoing within the city's administration. He has not been charged with a crime and none of the allegations have been tested in court. He stepped down as mayor of Montreal in 2012.
