"Love all, trust few."
Shakespeare wrote that.
He also said, do wrong to none.
Well, too many people trusted Earl Jones.
Too many people will lose everything because they were wronged.
It must be said that Earl Jones has been convicted of nothing. We have due process in this country and he will eventually have his day in court.
It is clear, though, that he has left a messy trail -- a legacy of heartbreak, misery and betrayal.
Members of his own family were duped.
There is plenty of blame to go around.
Investors who really should have known better.
You can't expect the money to keep rolling in when the market loses a third of its value.
Warren Buffett lost $25 billion.
Excessive trust
Good people trusted a little too much.
We've heard their tragic stories all week.
Earl Jones was a savvy trusted friend, a dynamic personality exuding confidence.
He belonged to the right clubs and sat on the right boards.
People say they had no reason not to trust Jones.
He was like the friendly uncle, the son, the brother.
More oversight
The things is, we need a better system.
The government must require all financial advisers or investment councilors to be registered.
It would be one way to protect small investors.
If Earl Jones is found guilty, the courts must not be lenient.
Follow the American lead.
Bernie Madoff received 150 years.
There should be no mercy from our courts either.
A lie is a lie
There was another sad story this week.
An immigrant family from Park Extension was torn apart -- the parents deported.
The children, including a five-year-old, stayed behind.
Sad indeed.
By all accounts Sabir Mohammed Sheikh and Seeba Sheikh are good people struggling to make a better future for themselves and their children. but they screwed up...
They lied about their background, about having spent years in a relatively safe haven of Dubai before applying to Canada for refugee status.
They entered Canada under false pretenses and it was right to have them deported.
They blatantly broke the rules.
You cant weigh lies...
This one is okay, that one is not.
Exceptions cannot be made.
Immigration to Canada cannot be a self-serve buffet where people take and do what they want.
I sincerely hope that this family will be reconciled. They are good for this country but they didn't tell the whole story.
As the old saying goes; a half truth is a whole lie.
I'm Barry Wilson and that's CTV Postscript for this week.
