History tells us that the first English Parliament was formed in 1236 during the reign of Henry the 3rd

The word Parliament is of course derived from French Parlement or the Latin; parliamentum.

In all 3 languages, it means the same thing.

Parliament, which has served us well for centuries, is not the personal playground of the prime minister.

It is the house of the people.

And right now, the people don't have much of a voice.

The more cynical amongst us say it was a crass political move designed to deflect attention from the afghan torture controversy.

Certainly not as the PM said, to give Canadians time to enjoy the Olympics

Its not the first time Harper has used the power of prorogue and to be fair Liberal PMs have done it too.

But limiting the prime ministers power to prorogue seems like a good idea… because it Ottawa these days, no one dare, disturb the sound of silence.

Hockey's headache

Here's a suggestion.

Make it mandatory for every junior hockey player to spend some time in a brain injury ward of a hospital.

Perhaps then they can see the full extent of the devastation of acquired brain injury.

The Quebec junior league suspended Patrice Cormier for the rest of the season.

That's it?

He just about killed a guy. It happened on the ice, but this was attempted murder.

In my view Cormier's career should be over.

When is hockey at all levels going to take this issue of head shots seriously? It just might take kid dying on the ice.

Deporting Dany

Finally, Canada Border Services wants to deport Dany Villanueva. His brother Fredy was the one shot and killed by police.

Dany is from Honduras. And has had plenty of experience with Canadian justice He served 11 months in jail for armed robbery, possessing a restricted weapon, and breaking conditions. Police say they had an outstanding arrest warrant for Villanueva when they confronted him after the shooting.

Defence will argue that the crimes were minor and should be ignored.

And even if he is ordered deported. There would be an appeal…and this thing could drag on for years. All the time. The meter is running and you are paying for it. There should be a clear message here.

We welcome people to this country from every corner of the earth.

But come in here and break the law…sorry your flight is waiting.
