Time is running out for a miracle. And Tony Proudfoot knows it.
In Wednesday's Montreal Gazette, there was a goodbye letter from the former star defensive back for the Montreal Alouettes It moved me to tears. You must read it for its love, and its truth.
Tony's battle with ALS –the so-called Lou Gehrig's disease is coming to an end. He has lived with this insidious disease longer than most. In his farewell, Tony speaks of being blessed. Blessed with love and support.
As his body fails him, Tony has refused to be a victim. He writes "I chose to take the high road to be positive and live life to the fullest."
He set out four goals.
And by all accounts not only accomplished but surpassed them by miles.
Two of them concerned his family and his friends to in his words "relish" in their support.
He made it priority to renew and improve his friendships.
He also wanted to make a difference in ALS awareness and fundraising.
He accomplished that in spades. People are so much more informed now. And the money he has raised will indeed help find a cure so people will no longer have to suffer such a cruel fate.
The Tony Proudfoot ALS foundation has so far raised half a million dollars.
In this time of giving, a donation to the ALS foundation would be most welcome.
But what struck me the most was his Goal Number 4.
Here is what Tony wrote: "Suck it up and get on with life (remember, no whining allowed!) and enjoy every day. What other option do any of us really have?"
He goes on: "As much as I went through, I cannot fathom what my wife, Vicki, and my kids, Michael, Lindsay and Lauren, went through. They are champions."
No Tony, you are the champion.
You see in this season of miracles, Tony and the way he has lived his life has indeed been nothing short of a miracle and an inspiration to all. We thank you Tony for teaching us and reminding us what it means to be human What it means to give so selflessly.
Messages we need to remember not only in this Christmas season. But every moment of every day of our lives.
