A truck hit two pedestrians Tuesday morning at the intersection of Chateaubriand Ave. and Belanger St. in Montreal’s Little Italy, killing one and inflicting serious injuries on the second.

Firefighters rushed to the scene around 10:30 a.m. and discovered two elderly women that had been dragged underneath the 18-wheeler's cab.

A passerby attempted to get the driver’s attention, but it was too late.

Officials brought in an inflatable bag to lift the truck off the victims and pull them out, at which point they were put in an ambulance and taken to hospital.

It took the fire department nearly half an hour to free the woman that was pinned beneath the truck. She suffered from serious trauma, particularly to her leg and died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Constable Raphael Bergeron said that the other victim suffered serious injuries to her head, and remains in hospital.
