MONTREAL - Buildings owned by a Park Extension landlord plagued with complaints will be evacuated by an order from the city of Montreal.
A notice was issued to residents Monday telling them they have a maximum of three to four weeks to move out of their units at 783-785 Ball Ave. and 7911 Outremont Ave., both owned by Claudio Di Giambattista.
Inspectors for the borough of Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension found over 250 cases of non-compliance with laws, and rendered the building unfit for habitation.
"Borough authorities working in cooperation with the city of Montreal to find a solution tailored to the particular circumstances of the unsafe buildings to provide tenants with decent housing," Mary Deros, councillor for Parc-Extension.
Earlier this month, tenants' rights activists asked the city to take control of the situation and help those living in the building, while taking Di Giambattista to task for leaving it in a dilapidated state.
Borough Mayor Anie Samson said the borough would seek the help of health and social services in the area for the tenants, some of whom are low-income earners.
Borough employees were escorted by police to inspect the building. A locksmith and a carpenter were also on hand to access locked areas.
Last November, the district also ordered tenants to evacuate 8151 Stuart Ave., also owned by Di Giambattista, for similar reasons of sanitation.
