MONTREAL - Without a will, there's simply no way Arturo Gatti's family can lay claim to the late boxer's fortune.
That's the argument from the lawyer for Gatti's widow. In his closing argument to a civil trial, he says Gatti's only valid will makes his wife the rightful heir.
The lawyer says the Gatti family hasn't done enough to prove the existence of an older will that names them.
Pierre-Hugues Fortin says his client, widow Amanda Rodrigues, has a signed will from 2009 that leaves her his fortune.
And Fortin says that's something the Gatti family can't say; all they have is an unsigned document with no trace of the original.
The civil trial over Gatti's estate is ending this week.
The Gatti family lawyer says Rodrigues is unworthy of inheriting his fortune. Just weeks after signing his will, the popular Canadian fighter was found dead at a Brazilian resort of an apparent suicide.
Rodrigues was originally arrested by Brazilian authorities, then later released without charge.
