Thousands of students marched through the South Shore Thursday to stand up to bullying.

Oct. 2 is the U.N.’s International Day of Non-Violence, celebrated each year on Mahatma Ghandi’s birthday

More than 2,000 students from the Marie Victorin School Board marked the occasion with a peaceful march.

Green Party member and former Canadiens enforcer Georges Laraque joined the children for the walk.

Teachers said they hoped hope the march will help teach children about mutual respect.

Montreal police honoured the day by created a series of videos (see below) to help children who are being bullied.

The videos encourage children to seek help -- and remind them that telling adults they are being attacked is not “tattling”.

The Montreal police also posted a list of tips (in French) for the bullied, their parents, and parents of bullies.

For children dealing with bullying, they offer the following tips:

  • Ignoring the person who intimidates you
  • Staying away from it
  • Not responding to provocations
  • Talking to someone you trust
  • Avoiding being alone
  • Taking note of the date and time of the bullying behavior
  • Clearly indicating your desire to be left alone
  • Contacting the police or specialized stakeholders

Also Thursday, tackling bullying was the focus of a forum in Quebec City, which was attended by a host of experts as well as Premier Philippe Couillard.
