Montreal's 5,000 blue-collar workers will stage a 24-hour walkout on August 31, saying they're upset about creeping privatization in the public service.

The union sent its strike notice to the city on Wednesday afternoon.

Sticking points

The workers have been without a contract since August 2007, two months after members had given their union an unlimited, general strike mandate. The union says it's been waiting for an offer from City Hall since June.

Sticking points include pay hikes and staffing levels.

The union also wants to take over snow-removal, garbage collection and water treatment functions from private-sector firms.
