After a weekend convention during which the Parti Quebecois proposed strengthening Bill 101 and accused the Liberals of undermining linguistic peace, Premier Jean Charest has responded by calling the party's ideas extreme.

"Mme. Marois is radicalizing the party," Charest said Monday.

PQ leader Pauline Marois told delegates that if she becomes premier, she will propose measures that will better protect the French language.

"Some people are angry now because they see there is an erosion in French," Marois said on Sunday.

The party believes Bill 101 should be amended in order to make it mandatory for non-Anglophones to attend French CEGEPS, and for the children of new immigrants to go to French daycares.

In addition, the party would like to see non-subsidized private schools included under Bill 101, further restricting access to English-language schools for newcomers to the province.

Marois said the party will take time to further study the issue, and will not officially adopt any positions on language policy until a convention in 2011.
