MONTREAL - Louise Harel has confirmed that she will once again be vying for the mayorship of Montreal during the next round of muncipal elections.
The leader of the Official Opposition made the announcement Sunday at a weekend meeting of her political party, Vision Montreal.
Harel was Municipal Affairs Minister for the Parti Quebecois when several municipalities, including Montreal and surrounding cities, were forcibly merged a decade ago,
Last month at a council meeting, Harel proposed that the city of Montreal reduce the number of councillors.
There are currently 103 elected officials in Montreal, with 19 mayors, and dozens of borough councillors and city councillors.
She has repeatedly said that Montreal needs to centralize power, instead of having authority spread out through multiple boroughs.
The next municipal elections take place it 2013.
