MONTREAL - Former Quebec Premier Jacques Parizeau says he's feeling better after a brief stint in the hospital in April.

Monday was the first time Parizeau was seen in public since his illness.

"It's doing better," he told a journalist who inquired after his health.

But the former premier was still visibly weak, walking with a cane and with the assistance of his wife, Parti Quebecois MNA Lisette Lapointe.

Parizeau was accompanying Lapointe to an awards ceremony in Montreal, where she was receiving a prize from a sovereigntist association for her contributions to Quebec society.

Parizeau, 79, was hospitalized for nine days for exhaustion and a drop in blood pressure.
