Jacques Parizeau was sent home from hospital Wednesday, although his doctors are asking him to take several more weeks to recuperate.
The former premier was admitted to the Jewish General Hospital last Monday, suffering from a drop in blood pressure brought on by exhaustion.
His condition quickly improved to "fair," but doctors kept him under observation for more than a week.
Parizeau, 79, and his family are asking the media and the public to let him rest.
Parizeau served as premier from 1994 to 1996, and is best known for his role in Quebec's sovereignist movement.
He led the "Yes" forces to defeat in the 1995 Quebec referendum, then announced his resignation after blaming the sovereigntist loss in that campaign on money and the ethnic vote, a comment that drew considerable scorn.
