A crater-like hole has opened up in the left lane of the Mercier Bridge, heading into Montreal. Witnesses are saying the hole is deep enough to see exposed wiring under the bridge.

The lane has been closed and workers are currently on the scene.

Maintenance crews were already on the bridge, preparing to close parts down for repair work that was scheduled to start this weekend.

For the next two weekends, the southbound side of the Mercier will be completely closed to traffic. Crews will repair the deck and reinforce part of the steel structure of the bridge.
