Quebecers will soon be able to reacquaint themselves with the joy of shoveling, as snow is expected to tumble from the heavens in significant amounts in some parts of the province over the next couple of days.

But an earlier warning of a heavy snowfall for Montreal appears to have been a false alarm, as only 5-10 centimetres (2 to 4 inches) are expected to fall on the city.

The precipitation is expected to drift north from the United States and begin early Tuesday evening near the United States border, slowly rumbling north, according to Environment Canada.

The flakes will be accompanied by heavy winds, causing blowing snow south of the St. Lawrence Valley.

Higher-lying regions in the Eastern Townships, Beauce, Gaspé and Charlevoix that are most likely to receive significant amounts of snow, as 10 cm to 25 cm (4 to 10 inches) could fall in those areas.

However temperatures are not expected to drop far below zero, so any snow accumulations will not be accompanied with bitter cold and the snow could even potentially turn into rain, creating what CTV Montreal weather specialist Lori Graham describes as a "messy mix."
